Health Technician (Dermatology)
What you'd do
About the Position: This position is located in the Dermatology Clinic, Naval Health Clinic Charleston, Goose Creek, South Carolina. Work will be completed in patient exam/procedure rooms and administrative office spaces. Working hours will be 0730-1600 Monday through Friday with exception of Federal holidays. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Major duties
Assist physicians in the performance of dermatological treatments and minor surgical procedures. Provide post-operative and follow-up patient care such as applying dressings and cleaning and redressing surgical wounds. Prepare patients for surgery. Provide administrative support such as scheduling patients, managing inventory, and maintaining records. Provide patient counseling and education. Treat patient skin disorders, perform skin tests, and draw blood for serological tests. Maintain cleanliness of procedure room. Examine tissue scrapings under microscope for specific pathological organisms or infected cell. Administer timed ultraviolet light treatments in accordance with written prescription from physician. Prepare smears and stains such as Wrights or Giemsa-stained crush. Follow infection control standards for machines and areas to ensure patient safety. Prepare equipment and materials needed by physician.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) providing patient care before, during, or after surgical procedures; 2) assisting physicians with surgical or dermatological procedures; 3) communicating with patients and clinicians about medical information; and 4) maintaining the cleanliness of the procedure room. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Preferred Certifications: Certified Dermatology Tech (CDT), Associate of Certified Dermatology Tech (ACDT), AND/OR Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Tech (CSPDT).
