IT Specialist (Disaster Operations Support)
What you'd do
This position is located in the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), supporting disaster affiliated Centers under the technical and administrative supervision of the Chief Information Officer (CIO). As a senior IT Specialist performing advanced operational work involving systems administration, infrastructure operations, network services, telecommunications systems, cloud technologies, customer support, and other activities supporting Center and Field disaster operations.
Major duties
As an IT Specialist (Disaster Operations Support) at the GS- 2210-12, some of your typical work assignments may include: Serves as a senior Information Technology Specialist responsible for independently supporting, integrating, optimizing, and maintaining complex operational environments and infrastructure services necessary to sustain operational continuity, disaster response capabilities, and mission critical IT operations. Diagnoses and resolves highly complex operational failures affecting multiple systems, services, operational areas, or field locations and restores critical services during periods of degraded performance or operational disruption. Implements, coordinates, and monitors operational IT security measures designed to protect systems, networks, telecommunications services, cloud environments, remote access services, devices, and operational data supporting disaster activities and continuity operations. Evaluates proposed hardware, software, telecommunications systems, cloud technologies, and infrastructure solutions by developing technical criteria, assessing operational compatibility, validating technical functionality, and recommending implementation approaches supporting operational continuity and disaster response requirements. Maintains operational documentation, systems configurations, inventory accountability records, continuity procedures, operational recovery documentation, technical guidance materials, and support documentation necessary to support Center operations and field disaster activities. IMPORTANT NOTES: Your primary residence is considered your official duty station. TRAVEL STATEMENT: You may be required to travel to a disaster site during increased disaster activity for extended periods with little or no advanced notice. If so, you may encounter hazardous working and/or living conditions; i.e., no water or electricity and/or minimal lodging facilities. Travel expenses are compensated based on SBA policy and Federal regulations. This position works on an as needed basis. This means that employees are in a pay and duty status only when activated to respond to workload needs, especially in response to heightened disaster activity. When no longer needed, employees return to an intermittent schedule and are not called into work until the next event necessitates additional staff. However, depending on the workload and/or level of disaster activity, your work schedule may be changed to full-time. Subsequently, if the workload decreases, you may be placed back onto an intermittent work schedule. Mandatory Overtime: In order to respond quickly and efficiently to disaster survivors, substantial compensated overtime hours may be required while on assignment (up to seven days a week and twelve to fourteen hours a day). A valid driver's license may be required.
What you need to qualify
GS-12: One year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector that demonstrates accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques pertinent to the position to be filled. Such knowledge is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant analyzed a number of alternative approaches in the process of advising others concerning major aspects of automated data processing system design, such as what system interrelationships must be considered, or what operating mode, system software, and/or equipment configuration is most appropriate for a given project. This level of work experience would reflect independence in planning and carrying out the assignment, selecting the approach or methodology to be used, resolving most of the conflicts that arise, and coordinating the work with others as necessary. Some examples of this experience include, but are not limited to: Independently performing work involving systems administration, operating cloud-connected systems, telecommunications systems, and enterprise applications supporting center operations; Independently resolving difficult operational problems involving systems performance, interoperability, connectivity, and operational functionality affecting users and systems; Monitoring network operations and systems performance to identify recurring operational issues, bottlenecks, vulnerabilities, or connectivity deficiencies affecting users and operational activities; Implementing and maintaining security controls and operational safeguards designed to protect systems, networks, devices, telecommunications services, and data. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Generally, time in Non-Pay status as a federal employee is not creditable towards the specialized experience requirement listed above.
