What you'd do
This position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Boise VA Medical Center in Boise, ID. The incumbent performs a variety of specimen processing and patient support functions, including collecting, evaluating, and processing patient specimens; responding to inquiries regarding specimen collection and handling; instructing and assisting patients during the collection process; and preparing and coordinating specimens for referral testing.

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: This is a part-time position (10 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. MAJOR DUTIES: Collects and processes specimens obtained for analyses throughout P&LMS and associated reference laboratories, ensuring safety and non-traumatic procedures are used with critical concern for the patients and the quality of the specimen Performs venipuncture specimen collections from inpatient, outpatients, and ambulatory inpatients, with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or requests re-sticks, ensuring that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. The incumbent must make judgments regarding sufficiency of sample, panel selection, and selection of testing medium. Makes gross visual observations and identifies subtle changes regarding the patient's condition, notifying appropriate emergency personnel as needed. Uses standard aseptic procedures and safeguards. Specimens will be obtained from individuals utilizing age specific criteria for the population. The use of a syringe or butterfly may be required in obtaining difficult specimens. The pre-analytical phase (i.e., proper skin cleansing, asking if a patient is fasting, choosing the proper needle to avoid lysing cells, choosing the proper tube for particular tests) is extremely important and is observed to provide accuracy of final reported values being used in the diagnostic area of medicine. Prepares specimens for testing, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc., prepares reagents, performs the test procedure, verifies the accuracy of the results and reports results in the VISTA computer system. Operates centrifuges, reporting any malfunction to supervisor, as needed, and evaluates temperature requirements of refrigerators and the wards as needed. Ensures work area remains clean. Receives and sorts specimens collected from inpatients, outpatients, and all CBOC's, checks request slips for proper information, logs in specimen, and delivers specimens to various laboratory sections. Utilizes a variety of reference materials to determine specimen and storage requirements, quantity, patient preparation, etc. of any requested Laboratory test, including reference lab tests. Receives, accessions, and processes of laboratory specimens from the main draw room, emergency department (ED), ward collect specimens, community-based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) and Home Base Health Care (HBHC) patient draws. Performs other related duties as assigned. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients. To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following: EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. ~OR~ EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. (Transcripts must be submitted by the closing date.) ~OR~ COMBINATION: An equivalent combination of post-high school education and specialized experience, as described above. Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience.
