Maintenance Mechanic - Mover/Installer
What you'd do
The Maintenance Mechanic - Mover/Installer is a team member of the Move Crew, assigned to the maintenance and Repair Section of Facilities Management Service for the VA Portland Health Care System. The position is responsible for the pick-up, installation, storage and distribution of supplies and furnishings for the Medical Center.
Major duties
Major duties include but are not limited to: Operates platform, van, stake, panel, flatbed, van, crew cab and pickup trucks as well as a forklift. Transports and delivers supplies, furniture, linen, waste, and interior design furnishings. Ensures supplies, linens, furniture/furnishings, and cargo are protected from the weather and is properly secured to prevent damage while in transit. Assists in coordinating movement and delivery of furniture and other items. Responsible for maintaining the furniture & supplies inventory in Facilities Maintenance Service Maintenance & Repair furniture storage warehouses, the issue and receipt of new furniture, supplies, equipment, and other required items. Evaluates and determines which excess furniture will be reissued, refinished, or discarded. Uses skilled techniques to construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute furniture for items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. Plans, assembles, and completes projects from layouts to final assembly. Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently, and determines the layout and work sequences and types of related materials. Lays, repairs, and installs counter tops and other similar items. Assembles and repairs a wide variety of structural items such as wall standards, furniture frames, partitions, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and articulated arms. Sets up and operate a wide variety of wood working machines and tools. Assemble items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops. Prepares surfaces and uses appropriate coating techniques in performing painting duties. Ensures that surfaces meet smoothness, level and shape requirements by tinting, toning, matching, and blending coating materials and adds various agents and combines coating mixtures to get the proper color, texture, consistency, and drying state. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm PST Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic - Mover/Installer/PD21748A Physical Requirements: Effort is required to control vehicles that carry heavy loads. Incumbent is required to bend, lift, stoop, climb, walk, and stand for long periods. Moves supplies, heavy furniture (i.e., file cabinets, desks, chairs, table, couches, etc.) and equipment, using dollies and other furniture moving equipment. Motor vehicle Operator shall wear appropriate safety apparel and may lift up to100Ibs. Working Conditions: Operates vehicles in all types of weather and traffic conditions. Activities are performed indoors/outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, excessive noise, excessive cold and heat, bright and dim headlights.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/12/2026. DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. Applicants are required to pass agency Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your driver's license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your valid state-issued driver's license. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, the ability to perform the duties of the Maintenance Mechanic - Mover/Installer without more than normal supervision. Related experience includes: Performing all types of general and finish carpentry, as well as any incidental plastering or painting required for the repair, alteration, and maintenance of buildings and furnishings. Laying out work, determining material and equipment needs; planning and accomplishing a wide range of work sequences, from basic repairs to complex project segments; using initiative and judgment in accomplishing work assignments; ordering materials to maintain a working stock and requisitions materials for routine work and projects; preparing surfaces using accepted methods and techniques; providing proper care, maintenance, and use of assigned tools and equipment; operating forklifts; platform, panel, van, stake, crew cab, and pickup trucks. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
