Laundry Machine Operator (Temporary Promotion NTE 120 Days)
What you'd do
Temporary Promotion NTE 120 Days. The incumbent is in the Laundry and Linen Distribution service of Environmental Management at the Northport VA Medical Center. He or she operates multiple commercial-type laundry washers, dryers and extractors and instructs Laundry Worker on their operation. This includes loading, unloading, and operating controls of machines to wash, dye, starch, or condition items for pressing, ensuring the facility has required laundry and linen for daily operations.
Major duties
Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Operates, loads and controls commercial laundry washes and dryers. Maintains and cleans work area, equipment and carts. Reports the need for equipment maintenance to supervisor or mechanic. Maintains load records for production schedules. Monitors weight carts and weight items on floor scale. Selects proper program depending on type of fabric being washed Unloads clean linen and directs it to the flatwork ironer or to the dryers. Monitors chemical dispensing system and replaces empty chemical barrels. Operates commercial laundry washers, tumble dryers, flat work ironer, crossfolders, stacker conveyor belts and small folders. Loads and unloads washers using the Overhead Monorail Hoisting and Stationary System Delivers clean linen from textile care and delivers linens to using areas either responding to emergency needs and/or on a regular route. Determines proper storage of supplies and equipment. Adheres to information security laws, regulations and VA policy. Follows regulations on the separation, segregation, storage, transportation and disposal of all medical wastes and ensures compliance with EPA, DOT and OSHA regulations. Follows medical center and patient privacy regulations. Utilizes appropriate laundry chemical products. Adheres to wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) Other duties as assigned. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/14/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: All duties are performed while standing, walking, bending or stooping on a concrete floor. Heavy lifting of bundles weighing over 23 kilograms (50 pound), and pulling are required while loading or unloading machines, heavy laundry bags, handling washroom supplies, etc. Physical condition must be good, as muscle strain, constant use of both hands, good footwork and eyesight are required.
