RIGGER
What you'd do
You will serve as a RIGGER in the Transportation Division of NAVAL STATION.
Major duties
You will plan, lay out, assemble, repair, and install complex weight handling gear and various related support rigging. You will use equipment such as chain falls, gin poles, tackle blocks, gallows frames, or combinations of these to rig and move objects through confined areas where cranes or other mobile material handling equipment cannot be used. You will work aboard ships, floating crafts, hangers, or pier side. You will be responsible for the safety of workers near the rigged object, as well as the safety of equipment and materials. You will frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds. You will work indoors and outdoors and will be subject to all types of weather.
What you need to qualify
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks including: The ability to plan, lay out, assemble, repair and install complex weight handling gear and various related support rigging. The ability to determine the proper weight handling equipment and rigging gear required for the load. The ability to make difficult load routing judgements by considering factors such as size, shape, and location of the object; availability and strength of overhead support structures; surface conditions; obstacles; and size of surrounding openings. The ability to use complex multipoint suspension techniques to permit maneuvering over, under, and around obstacles by tilting, dipping, and turning the suspended load. The ability to be responsible for the safety of equipment and materials handled, and for the safety of workers near the rigged object. The ability to apply sound judgement in selecting the appropriate safety gear and equipment for each assignment. The ability to provide training and support to other employees. Willing and able to obtain licensing and certification for other activities, such as aerial work on platforms and handling explosives and hazardous materials. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. I have the ability to perform the full range of tasks including: The ability to plan, lay out, assemble, repair, and install complex weight handling gear and various related support rigging. The ability to determine the proper weight handling equipment and rigging gear required for the load. The ability to make difficult load routing judgements by considering factors such as size, shape, and location of the object. The ability to complete unusual rigging situations, or those involving the rigging of loads which are near the capacity of the equipment normally cleared through a supervisor. The ability to be responsible for the safety of equipment and materials handled. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection. I have the ability to perform common tasks including: The ability to plan, lay out, assemble, repair, and install complex weight handling gear and various related support rigging. The ability to determine the proper weight handling equipment and rigging gear required. The ability to maintain awareness of work operations for possible hazards, and take steps to eliminate or control hazards. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
