Wage and Hour Technician
What you'd do
This position is located in the Department of Labor (DOL), Wage and Hour Division (WHD). The position is responsible for conducting investigations of employers across all industries within the geographical boundaries of the assigned District Office's jurisdiction to ensure compliance with all of the laws that WHD is responsible for enforcing. Major duties
This is a developmental position. The career ladder progression is GS-07/8/9. In the developmental grade levels, the employee will carry out a variety of assignments as a continuation of their training and development, with duties being performed under closer than normal supervision. As the employee progresses, the assignments will become more difficult and complex in preparation to fully perform the duties at the full performance level (GS-09). As a Wage and Hour Technician (Bilingual English/Spanish Language Preferred) you will perform the following duties which are not all-inclusive: Assists the DD/ADD as needed with various administrative and management duties. Provides technical assistance to the public, and employers/employees regarding Wage and Hour laws and regulations. Uses a computer to input data, create documents and create and maintain files. Initiate appropriate notification and/or referral to other agencies. Types letters, forms, e-mail communications and other applicable documents. Receives incoming complaints and determine if probable violations exist or refers callers to the appropriate agency or personnel. Provides answers to inquires relating to the statutes enforced by the Wage and Hour Division. Documents detailed complaint statements thoroughly addressing the alleged violation(s). Drafts and prepares responses to letters for the employers and employees on application of Wage and Hour laws, back wage installments complaints investigations statutes etc. Communicates with internal and external personnel to determine the validity of complaints. Conducts interviews in person, via telephone or virtually using systems such as Microsoft Teams. Contacts employers by telephone to resolve complaints and where appropriate computes and when authorized negotiates back wages for complaints by means of conciliatory methods. Reviews time and payroll records to identify violations in pay and employment practices. Under supervision, computes back wages, penalties and liquidated damages Applies accounting procedures necessary for monitoring and handling back wage payments. Uses judgment in selecting alternative means of locating material necessary to investigate, complete or follow through on complaints and other cases. Determines the relevance and importance of a large number of facts or questions and analyze conditions and elements to define interrelationships and applicability of governing wage and hour provisions and draws conclusions.
What you need to qualify
Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-6 in the Federal Service. Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Qualifying specialized experience for GS-7 includes: 1) Experience preparing written communication to summarize information; 2) Experience responding to and/or resolving customer complaints; 3) Experience assisting with interviews or investigations to gather data/information; 4) Experience analyzing numerical data to identify discrepancies and/or perform mathematical calculations. Bilingual English / Spanish language fluency (PREFERRED) - Spanish and English is preferred but not required. However, if you indicate that you are fluent in both Spanish and English, you may be interviewed in both languages and you may be asked to read/write and/or translate documents from Spanish to English and vice versa, to verify fluency.
