The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Lead within Facilities Management Service (FMS) at VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System (VAECHCS) in Aurora, Colorado is considered a working lead in charge of all work performed by the Air Conditioning, Heating Ventilation and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) Shop and performs the work duties of a Journeyman A/C Mechanic and leads subordinates to accomplish work.

Major duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Performs the work of a Journeyman Air Conditioning Mechanic and leads subordinates to maintain and make repairs to the Air Conditioning Plant. Assigns work and passes on instructions received from supervisors to other workers. Demonstrates proper work methods. Ensures plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available. Schedules and inspects work in progress to ensure supervisor instructions and deadlines are met. Maintains stock levels of parts and supplies needed for operation, repair, and upkeep of all items assigned to AC Refrigeration and Heating Unit. Diagnoses malfunctions, installation modifications, major overhaul, cleaning, replacing wiring units, servicing AC System with appropriate gas or liquid, minor sheet metal and insulation work, repair, test, and adjust controls for healthcare facility. Repairs multi-zone AC systems, cooling towers, water pumps, flow indicators, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic valves, drinking water coolers, steam, electrical, and gas fired heating units, pressure reducing valves, traps, ventilation units, mechanical and motorized louvers, vent pipe for gas fired equipment, strainers, and any other devices associated with cooling, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Troubleshoots complete Air Conditioning System for healthcare facility including Building Automation System (BAS) and control circuits. Maintains orderly and accurate records. Work Schedule: 6 am - 2:30 pm, Monday-Friday Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader/PD00131A Physical Requirements: May be required to bend, reach and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places and cramped spaces. Considerable climbing, walking and stooping is also required for this position. Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50lbs. either alone or with others. Works indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards. Required to work in close, extremely hot or cold places and around high voltage electricity. Must work in noisy, dusty and humid places.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Familiar with work-order software such as Maximo or a similar CMMS, e-mail and electronic communication. Basic Microsoft office Word and Excel entering, updating, and tracking maintenance records, reading digital manuals, schematics, and job instructions. Basic troubleshooting/reporting in a computer based Building Automation System (BAS) System. In accordance with 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, EPA, people working in this type of position must have and maintain proper EPA Certifications for working with refrigerants. You must have these EPA Certification Types I, II and III in order to meet the requirements of this position. CFC CERTIFICATION: Incumbent is required to remain current and be in compliance with all Federal, State and Local EPA laws, rules and regulations as pertains to job responsibilities, All air conditioning mechanics are required to possess an EPA Universal CFC Certification as required by Section 609 of the Clean Air Act. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
