Firefighter (Basic Life Support/HAZMAT Technician)
What you'd do
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Major duties
You will serve as a member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property, responding to alarms and combating fire involving structures, equipment, facilities, crashed and burning aircraft, fuel, chemicals, and brush fires. You will fight fires using turrets and large crash fire rescue firefighting apparatus. You will serve as a Hazardous Material Technician on the installation Hazardous Materials Response Team and respond to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials both chemical and biological to stop or control the release. Train in preparation for hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction incident response and procedures; and perform hazard and risk assessment to conduct an incident analysis. You will prepare incident reports and documentation; maintain and decontaminate hazmat equipment and supplies. You will initiate established medical protocols in providing basic life support and perform noninvasive emergency procedures.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify at the GS-04 or GS-05 level, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Following detailed instructions to assist with basic firefighter duties, such as using and/or maintaining basic firefighter equipment and 2) administering basic first aid to injured victims. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Utilizing and maintaining firefighting equipment; 2) Applying basic first aid; AND 3) Participating in firefighting and rescue situations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. In order to qualify at the GS-06 and GS-07 level, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Performing standard firefighting techniques; 2) Responding to basic hazardous materials incidents; AND 3) Performing basic emergency medical care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Operating firefighting equipment such as pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment; 2) Operating firefighting vehicles to keep fire in optimum range while ensuring that backflash will not occur; and 3) Completing initial incident analysis by identifying materials involved, determining whether hazardous materials have been released, and evaluating the surrounding conditions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). **In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess certificates below certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
