What you'd do

As a Biologist Science Technician (Wildlife), you will assist in the planning and execution of wildlife program activities for the Southeastern States Bureau of Land Management located in Flowood, Mississippi. You will perform a range of field and technical support duties that contribute to wildlife habitat management, data collection, monitoring efforts, and overall program success. Anticipated Entry on Duty: September 2026

Major duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Participates in inventories of wildlife and their habitats. Collects data on wildlife habitat conditions and age, species location, breeding status, species condition. Participates in construction projects such as water developments, and fencing. Compiles and organizes survey data, prepares narratives and reports; enters and receives data from automated databases. Works with range, lands, recreation, wild horse, and other programs to improve or repair infrastructure. Helps other technicians/aids in collecting field data and completing required projects.

What you need to qualify

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/19/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Examples of this experience includes activities such as:banding, tagging, and releasing wildlife; inventorying rare and endangered species habitat based on guidelines. -OR- B. Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to this position. -OR- C. Equivalent combination of experience and education that, together, equal 100% of the qualification standards listed above when combined. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors. The OPM Qualification Standards Handbook is available for review at: OPM Qualification Standards. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
