Electrical Equipment Repairer-Wheelchair Technician
What you'd do
This position is located within the Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service at the Denver VA Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. The Electrical Equipment Repairer - Wheelchair Technician is responsible for the testing, diagnosis, preventive maintenance, and repair of scooters, walkers, and all wheelchairs both manual and power.
Major duties
Major duties and responsibilities include: Uses voltmeters, ohmmeters, field multi-meters, circuit testers and battery chargers according to interpretation in the technical orders, schematics, wiring diagrams, and assembled and non-assembled micro-switches, multi-control switches to manufactures specifications. Energizes, adjusts, and tests new manual/power wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers before it is issued. Adjusts the various electronic controls used by the head, chin or hand to navigate the equipment. Fabricates parts for special applications to manual and power wheelchairs, scooters, or walkers and adjusts the restrictive devices such as belts, straps and postural supports. Repairs, modifies, assembles, and tests a variety of electrical equipment for DC motors on a wide assortment of electrical wheelchairs. Checks and repairs gears and clutches, when necessary, also replaces and repairs items such as brushes, seals, bearings or armatures. Performs specific checks to measure resistance, voltage, and capacity using a wide range of automatic test equipment (ATE) and other specialized test equipment, performing both the pretest and the final checkout of electrical equipment. Maintains an inventory of all wheelchair parts, manual and electric to properly and timely repair the equipment for the veterans. Sanitizes the equipment before repairing it, by following the local infection control policy. Performs other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Full time, Monday through Friday; 7:00am-5:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized. DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Must posses a current, valid state-issued Driver's License is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid state-issued Driver's License. (SCREEN-OUT): Must have the ability to do the work of an Electrical Equipment Repairer without more than normal supervision - diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining powered mobility equipment or similar electrical/electronic equipment. Experience also includes interpreting schematics and wiring diagrams; wiring diagrams; using electrical diagnostic equipment (e.g, voltmeters, ohmmeters, multimeters); replacing defective components, and documenting completed repairs. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The person in this position will be required to perform maintenance, repairs, and cleaning which require bending and stooping for prolonged periods of time. Assists Veterans and others with loading and unloading wheelchairs delivered to the wheelchair repair shop for repairs. Lifts and carries lead-acid batteries. Often lifts and carries items weighing more than 50 pounds. Work is performed in the wheelchair repair shop of the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service. OSHA regulations must be followed regarding the equipment used and the shop environment. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
