Maintenance Mechanic
What you'd do
The incumbent in this position is under supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor within the Maintenance & Operations (M&O) section within the Facilities Management Service located at the Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System (NAVAHCS) in Prescott, AZ. The primary purpose is the maintenance and repairs of grounds equipment, facility equipment, heavy equipment, generators, building maintenance, and installations throughout the facility.
Major duties
The incumbent performs at the craftsman and journeyman level on a variety of equipment and systems, working with a team of different trades to the betterment of equipment, systems, and service to our veterans and their dependents. The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Uses standard prescribed procedures, methods, tools and equipment common to the trade to complete assignments. Tests, inspects, maintains, overhauls, modifies, repairs, aligns, calibrates, installs and is considered a subject matter expert for a wide variety of equipment and individual devices or systems of widely varying complexity. Repairs, re-builds and installs a large variety of equipment. Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment as assigned. Assists Journeyman Electricians in the performance of routine operation, maintenance, repair, and service of Emergency Power Generators, both gasoline and diesel, Automatic Transfer Switches. Maintenance, Repair, minor renovations and construction procedures related to electrical, electronics, pipefitting, AC mechanic, grounds, equipment operations, carpentry, painting and plumbing. What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/19/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience performing maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of building systems and equipment within a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center or other accredited healthcare facility. Preferred Experience: Experience with diesel engines and generators preferred. Medical gas and vacuum systems experience needed. 6040 Medical gas certification preferred. Physical Requirements: The incumbent may be required to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in awkward positions for prolonged periods. The work can sometimes require strenuous physical exertion. May handle or carry weights up to 50 pounds, and occasionally more. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces that can be found at or in transit to or from work sites. May receive minor cuts and abrasions while performing these duties. Must be able to work from ladders and platforms, and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions. Working Conditions: Incumbent works indoors and outdoors. Work involves frequent walking, standing and occasional desk work. The position requires stooping, bending, or working in cramped conditions under extreme temperatures (hot and cold), and in inclement weather and/or awkward positions. Incumbent must be able to work in noisy, dirty, dusty, greasy, and sometimes humid environment. Incumbent may be assigned to work in areas/confined spaces where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. He/she is subject to hazardous conditions which may include the risk of scrapes, cuts, bruises, burns, contusions, infections, broken bones, and respiratory ailments. He/she must be aware of these risks and be able to cope with them. Safety procedures must be followed, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn, as required for the specific work area or task. Work may be performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms.
