Paralegal Specialist
What you'd do
This position is located in the regional Office of the Solicitor, in New York, NY. This regional office is responsible for the trial in U.S. District Courts and before administrative law judges of all civil litigation enforces by the Department of Labor, providing legal advisory services to regional agency personnel and other Department of Labor components in states and areas within the Office's jurisdiction. This position is outside the bargaining unit.
Major duties
Assist attorneys in litigation support tasks such as compiling and organizing materials and cases for use in court appearances and litigation proceedings. Scans, indexes, and saves case investigation files into the appropriate case management system, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with office filing procedures and naming conventions. Schedule witnesses for depositions, arranges for court reporters and meeting rooms, and contacts private attorneys on routine scheduling and administrative matters. Identifies and flags items requiring legal judgment for attorney review and action. Deal with employers, court clerks, and other government officials to obtain or provide factual information on active cases or to follow up on case-related administrative matters. Assist with procurement arrangements in support of office mission needs, under the direction of the managers and management analyst. Assist with additional administrative management activities.
What you need to qualify
You must meet the Specialized Experience and/or Education Substitution to qualify for Paralegal Specialist, as described below. Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. IN DESCRIBING YOUR EXPERIENCE, PLEASE BE CLEAR AND SPECIFIC. This is imperative in determining if whether you have at least one year of creditable specialized experience. Dates will not be assumed. GS-09: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-07, in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: Knowledge of the SOL litigation manual, national SOL litigation administrative policies and procedures, and Regional SOL litigation and administrative policies and procedures, as applied to recurring assignments. Utilize legal sources of information and research techniques sufficient to locate, retrieve, and compile specific documents or information as directed by supervising attorneys. Prepare routine legal correspondence, draft standard pleadings and forms, and complete reports for attorney review. Or Successful completion of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree that provided the knowledge's, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position Or Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education that provided the knowledge's, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position Or Successful completion of a LL.B or J.D that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
