What you'd do

The Secretary (Office Automation), GS-0318-07, serves as the Office Manager for the Health Administration Service (HAS) at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. The position provides comprehensive administrative, clerical, and executive-level support to the Chief of HAS and the service's supervisory staff.

Major duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Receives, schedules, refers, and contacts staff, agency personnel, and external individuals Handles high-level contacts with congressional offices, state/local officials, industry leaders, veterans' service organizations, attorneys, fee basis providers, and others. Engages with parties whose interests significantly impact mission/program execution. Processes incoming/outgoing correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other written communication. Edits and composes letters, reports, and presentations. Prepares outlines and background material for public speaking engagements and reports. Schedules appointments and coordinates meetings or conferences. Conducts independent background research for meeting topics. Attends meetings, prepares minutes, and independently follows up on action items Provides guidance on policies and procedures related to office services. Addresses questions regarding new projects, shifting priorities, and commitments. Performs other duties as assigned Provides courteous, tactful, timely, and respectful customer service to internal and external stakeholders. Handles conflicts constructively and according to established guidelines. Has regular access to printed/electronic sensitive information. Protects data under the Privacy Act, HIPAA, VA/DoD policies. Manages information security to ensure confidentiality and appropriate system access. Reports and addresses any violations of information security policies. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/28/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Managing a supervisor's calendars, schedules, meetings, and prioritizing commitments. Composing, editing, and reviewing correspondence, reports, and documents for correctness and completeness. Receiving and handling high-level visitors, calls, and inquiries, determining the nature/purpose of contact, and resolving issues or directing appropriately. Independently performing administrative functions such as preparing meeting minutes, tracking action items, coordinating travel, and maintaining office files. Applying knowledge of office policies, procedures, priorities, and workflow to carry out non-routine assignments. Using office automation software to create and format documents, reports, charts, and presentations. Interacting tactfully and professionally with internal/external stakeholders to resolve administrative issues.
