What you'd do

The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (MSA) serves as a direct line supervisor within Health Administration Service (HAS) at VA Illiana Health Care System (VAIHCS) in Danville, IL. The Supervisory MSA serves as the direct line supervisor for the Lead Medical Support Assistant(s) and all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) staff.

Major duties

Assuring coverage of all areas of responsibility. Ensuring that the highest levels of customer service and the principles of AIDET are adhered to. Assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff. Resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met. Evaluating new products, equipment, and systems in order to make recommendations for improved operations. Identifying educational or training needs. Making final decisions on applicant selections. Evaluating performance and taking disciplinary action when necessary. Professional responsibility for planning and directing the MSA's activities. Responsible for extracting and analyzing data in order to provide reports in support of performance measures to senior management. Responsible for developing and submitting yearly budget needs for the department, tracking monthly spending in relation to approved budget, forecasting and requesting FTEE requirement adjustments. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm Telework: Ad-hoc only - This position is required to be on station full-time in Danville, Illinois. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/20/2026. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education/Experience: Experience. No experience required. Education: Must possess a High School Diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education. GRADE DETERMINATION: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, one must have the required specialized experience in order to qualify as a Supervisory Medical Support Assistant, GS-8. GS-08 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have one (1) year of experience that is directly related to the duties of a MSA and that equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must be equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-7, and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with current MSA responsibilities. Required experience includes: Assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate MSA staff; resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met; evaluating new products, equipment, and systems to make recommendations for improved clinic operations; identifying educational or training needs; making final decisions on hiring selections; evaluating performance, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. Ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; providing guidance to staff members, to include changes in policies and procedures; creating and maintaining employee work schedules. AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: You also must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties to at least one subordinate MSA supervisor or team leader in a patient support setting which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations. Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training in a patient support setting. Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget needs. Advanced knowledge of managing or leading patient support staff in a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. Physical demands do not exceed those of a typical office setting. There may be some walking, standing twisting, turning, sitting, pushing, bending, repetitive keyboarding, or carrying of light items. Some positions may require sitting for long periods of time at a computer terminal typing data while talking on a telephone headset.
