About the Position: The primary purpose of this position is to perform difficult and complex medical laboratory diagnostic testing on specimens in the chemistry, serology, hematology, urinalysis, immunohematology, and microbiology sections of a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) laboratory. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Major duties

Select the procedures which are appropriate for the request for service and congruent with patient considerations. Analyze specimens using equipment, instruments, or techniques. Analyze specimens using equipment, instruments, or techniques. Perform difficult and complex medical laboratory diagnostic testing on specimens in the chemistry, serology, hematology, coagulation. urinalysis, immunohematology, and microbiology sections of a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) laboratory. Evaluate the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures. Test and develop quality control methods, calculate the mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and determining statistical significance. Operates high complexity analyzers and microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, and balances that require very fine distinctions and many extremely delicate and exacting steps.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. GS-06:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes processing specimens in a clinical laboratory; maintaining or shipping specimens; and preparing reports and/or documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-07:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing procedures in a clinical laboratory; calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments; preparing samples for testing; documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) AND Certification: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required for the GS-07 position. (Note: You must attach a copy of your certification.) This position can be filled at any level (GS-6; or GS-7) with noncompetitive promotion to the next grade level GS-7; pending time in grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the next higher/target level grade duties.
