What you'd do

The primary purpose of the position is to provide guidance, oversight and support of Laundry/Linen section workers and perform Laundry/Linen tasks (ie: receiving, sorting, processing, classifying, marking, assembling, folding, stacking, wrapping, etc.).

Major duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Requires the ability to work independently to resolve problems and make changes or reschedule duties to avoid interference with medical staff. Requires the ability to independently perform the full range of linen duties in an assigned area. Works with employees on work team and sorts, organizes, delivers, and stocks inventory. Works alongside other workers and sets the pace and demonstrates proper work methods. Consistently communicates and treats coworkers, Veterans, visitors and other staff in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner. Ability to assign work and projects to employees to ensure adequate staffing to complete tasks assigned by supervisor. Assures that needed plans, standard operating procedures, and materials are available and that inventory is appropriately maintained. Assures there is enough work to keep everyone in the work team busy. Provides guidance to at least three WG-2 and one WG-5 employees to ensure work and activities are being performed in accordance with established procedures. Provides instructions to employees on specific tasks to be completed by passing on instructions received from supervisor, assigns tasks to be performed by individual members of team, and verifies completed work. Ability to maintain current knowledge and answer questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives. Uses and ensures that all personnel use correct body mechanics when lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling, etc. Assures safety and basic housekeeping practices are observed. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/26/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Dexterity and Safety Instruct Lead or Supervise Plan and organize work Without more than normal supervision Work as Member of Team Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to meet the continuous and repetitive physical demands of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting. Incumbent frequently lifts linens weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and pushes or pulls linen carts weighing up to six hundred (600) pounds to and from various locations within the Medical Center. This position is required to work continuously on concrete or tiled flooring. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed in a well-lit and climate-controlled atmosphere. Work assignments vary in terms of duration; however, most assignments are of a limited duration. Incumbent is intermittently exposed to lint, high noise levels, and infectious hazards. The position is subject to cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, slips, falls, and other injuries in the performance of required duties. The incumbent may be exposed to disagreeable odors in the accomplishment of duties. Temperatures in the work area may vary from extreme heat in summer to cold drafts in winter.
