The Southern Arizona VA Healthcare Systems (SAVACHS) is seeking a Supervisory Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSAs). The incumbent serves as the direct supervisor for all AMSAs in support of the Primary Care Clinics. This position provides support work in connection with the care and treatment given to patients in clinics, wards or other such units as assigned.
Major duties
Duties include but not limited to: Extract and analyze data in order to provide reports in support of performance measures to senior management. Monitor Secure Messages to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of responses. Complete clinic cancellations within the timeframe set forth by the local facility and create new or format existing clinics for individual services. Assist with clinic access contingency plans by adjusting provider schedules and patient appointments, avoiding staffing conflicts. Responsible for new employee orientation and is part of a team that conducts comprehensive training for new employees. Responsible for Recall Reminder clinics being utilized and monitored for delinquencies. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 6:30am-3:00pm Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. What you need to qualify
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f) Education: High school diploma or transcript (including homeschooling) General Education Development (GED) certificate Proficiency certificate issued by a State or Territorial Board or Department of Education Post-high school education You do not have one of the education levels listed above, but you were in the Medical Support Assistant occupation (GS-0679) on a permanent appointment with the Department of Veterans Affairs as of February 5, 2026, meeting all qualification requirements as part of the grandfathering provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: : In addition to the Basic Requirements, to be qualified you must have one year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-7). In addition, you must demonstrate the following KSAs: Advanced knowledge of managing or leading patient support staff in a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and 13 empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment. Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties to at least one subordinate MSA supervisor or team leader in a patient support setting which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations. Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training in a patient support setting. Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget needs. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with prolonged periods of sitting. The work requires moderate lifting, carrying, pushing, standing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; ability to read without strain; ability to hear the whispered voice with or without hearing aid; emotional & mental stability.
