What you'd do

As a member of the Trinka Davis Veterans Village Maintenance team, the Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing a wide range of duties within the HVAC and Electrical trades, such as performing maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and inspection of the ground source HVAC and electrical systems. This position is located in Carrollton, Georgia and reports to the Facility Operations Supervisor.

Major duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates, and maintains HVAC systems and non-medical electronic instrumentation and devices used in plant operation applications within the facility and in other non-medical electronic applications. Plant operation applications include building automation systems, energy management systems, HVAC control systems, access control systems, and security systems. Performs and documents preventive maintenance and safety inspections to insure safe, proper, and reliable operation of instruments and devices. Develops preventive maintenance procedures for new equipment and revises old procedures to reflect current accepted practices and changes. Responsible for functional equipment safety regarding the operator and any other affected equipment user. Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safety operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays fixtures, transformers and other electrical devises including electrical service entrances. Performing related duties as required. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm. Work Schedule is subject to change based on agency needs. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/28/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measuring Instruments Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires considerable standing, stooping and bending, working on ladders, platforms, rooftops and scaffolds which may require work in cramped or awkward positions. When at a job site, strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials. The Maintenance Mechanic may be required to use manual or portable power tools for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. May also be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move heavier items with assistance of lifting devices or other workers. May frequently be required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds. The work is inside all areas throughout the Trinka Davis Veterans Village that are usually dirty, dusty, and greasy and may make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Exposure to moderately high noise levels, dust and fumes, may require use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses and gloves. Incumbent works outside in all types of weather conditions.
