What you'd do

You will serve as a Engineering Technician (Civil). These positions are located in the Bureau of Land Management, Wyoming District Offices located in Casper, Rock Springs, and Worland, Wyoming. Pay will vary based on grade level and/or duty location for which you're selected. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Major duties

Prepare original drawings and preliminary layouts, as well as updates and revisions to drawings, including final as-built drawings. Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, operate, and maintain instrumentation and equipment associated with engineering and architecture projects and activities, including scientific data collection. Conduct inspections and assessments that involve a wide variety of test and inspection techniques. Draft technical documentation for assigned technical engineering work assignments and reviews documentation of lower graded technicians. Monitor project plans that outline the scope, schedule, and/or budget of assigned projects. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Salary Ranges for Rock Springs and Worland, Wyoming: GS-07: $50,460- $65,599 GS-08: $55,882 - $72,644 GS-09: $61,722 - $80,243 Salary Ranges for Casper, Wyoming: GS-07: $58,193 - $75,653 GS-08: $64,446 - $83,777 GS-09: $71,181 - $92,541

What you need to qualify

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/01/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications: GS-07: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting technical engineering evaluations; (2) drafting technical documentation for engineering work assignments; (3) using databases to maintain engineering data and records. OR Education: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education in an appropriate field of study such as engineering, construction, or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics. OR Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement. GS-08: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting technical engineering evaluation and analysis assignments; (2) reviewing drawings for conformance to established engineering standards, criteria, and project requirements; (3) performing quality assurance and data integrity review of electronic data and records. OR Education: Successful completion of at least two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a master's or a completed master's degree in an appropriate field of study such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics. OR Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement. GS-09: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting difficult but precedented technical engineering evaluation and analysis assignments; (2) analyzing engineering issues and project objectives; (3) making adjustments to standard procedures or operations based on situations encountered in the field or during the study. OR Education: Successful completion of at least two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a master's or a completed master's degree in an appropriate field of study such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics. OR Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
