Major duties

Arranges complete routing, coordinates special handling with carriers, and plans the movement of priority CONUS/OCONUS shipments to ensure timely delivery and resolve a wide range of transportation problems. Performs freight shipment and transportation support functions by preparing en route instructions for material and coordinating special loading and handling needs with carriers to ensure the timely movement of material. Prepares and schedules routing and priority shipments through the supply and transportation automated system. Plans, coordinates, and controls shipment of material and equipment. Provides status, resolves problems, prepares reports, and traces shipment upon requests. Determines the most efficient economical rates and routes to destination involving domestic inbound and outbound shipments. Serves as the point of contact for customers, providing shipping information and status updates, informing on item availability, and coordinating with carriers to ensure proper routing and handling of transportation services from start to finish.

What you need to qualify

To qualify for a Transportation Assistant your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience is preferred includes: Responding to customer inquiries and ensuring alignment with existing processes. Researching and verify accuracy of information to and from stakeholders. Reconciling, preparing, verifying, and updating reports and documents. Identifying logistics problems and offering viable solutions. Assisting in the development, implementation and managing multiple projects, assignments, or tasks simultaneously to prioritize work in a changing environment. B. Education: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-05 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To be found well-qualified as an ICTAP applicant, individuals need to demonstrate experience such as: Utilizing regulations, policy, and procedures to perform a wide variety of interrelated and nonstandard support; Using automated systems to reconcile errors, delays, and research open and late actions; Performing in-depth research on customer complaints and initiates action for discrepancies; and Preparing correspondence in order to obtain, clarify or provide information related to support assignments, status, verify needs, obtain missing information, etc.
