What you'd do

Serves as a support member of the nursing team. The incumbent will perform duties under the direction of the RN's and is an assistant to the physician, mid-level provider or nurse when professional skills of a physician, mid-level provider or nurse are not required. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

Major duties

Total Compensation Package - Check out IHS's outstanding total compensation package for this job: Health Technician Total Compensation | Pay (ihs.gov) Complete tasks that are of a clerical and technical support to the Medical and Nursing Staff. Trained and assists with the registration and discharge process of patients admitted to the inpatient nursing unit. Explains procedures and instructions for visit, provides informal and basic health education to patients and families. Answers phones, screens calls and forwards to appropriate staff. Stocks supplies in exam rooms and cleans exam rooms between patients to ensure availability. Monitors supplies and notifies the Charge Nurse and/or nurse supervisor of supply needs. Assists in emergency situations, including CPR and other lifesaving maneuvers. May collect sample data from charts for QA studies and assists with performance improvement activities. Obtain BLS within 6 months of hire and maintain current CLS certification and other skills necessary for competence.

What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Education and Training For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. The following shows the amounts of experience required to qualify for positions covered by this standard. GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Take and record vital signs. Schedule appointments. Operate specialized medical equipment. Adhere to clinic and departmental safety regulations. Enter patient data into electronic health record. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
