This position is located at the Erie VA Medical Center, Facility Management Service, Maintenance & Repair (M&R) section. The incumbent performs work involved in the maintenance and repair of exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, missionary, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, cement work, painting, and other related trades.

Major duties

Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD031020 Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. The work requires knowledge of the construction, operation, and functional characteristics of locking devices, and skill in manufacturing replacement parts, devising or changing combinations, establishing master keying systems, neutralizing lockouts, and a variety of installation and repair processes such as filing, drilling, chiseling, and grinding. Duties include but are not limited to: Performs the full range of work in the installation, repair, maintenance and modification of a wide variety of commercial locking devices with varying makes and models found in doors, desks, safes, vaults, compartments, mobile equipment, and secured areas. Disassembles repairs, cleans, reassembles, and ' reinstalls a large variety of moderate to extremely complex locking devices. Provides expert advice and recommendations to management on the most appropriate locks/systems for specific security requirements. Where appropriate, suggests the use of a master key system to preclude the overuse of keys. Troubleshoots to determine malfunctioning components and repairs by reworking existing parts based on knowledge of internal structure plus the operating characteristics of a wide range of models. Carefully examines all locks worked on for evidence of attempted neutralization and, if found, takes the steps necessary to decertify the lock and/or container. May provide technical assistance and guidance to remote customer locations and to lower graded/less experienced locksmithing personnel. Setting up and operating a wide variety of wood working machines and tools. Assembling items with a wide variety of joining techniques such as mitters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and using glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops. Constructing and repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts weighing up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions: Covers the hazards, physical hardships, and work conditions to which works are exposed in performing assigned work. Position vary in such ways as the nature of the work environment; the extent to which it include unpleasant, disagreeable, hazardous conditions; the degree to which such conditions are experienced; the frequency and duration practices; and possible effects on the worker. Elements considered under this factor include, but are not limited to: 1. Lighting, heating, and ventilation in work area. 2. Weather conditions to which exposed when working outdoors. 3. Temperature to which exposed in the work area. 4. Dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces. 5. Noise and vibration. 6. Gases and fumes. 7. Hazards in working above ground level, on slippery surfaces, or in crowded areas near moving vehicles or cutting tools.
