What you'd do

The Dental Service line at the Greater Los Angeles Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a full-time, Staff Periodontist to serve as a practicing specialist who provides the full range of periodontal procedures and surgical implant therapy necessary for the management of commonly encountered periodontal and peri-implant conditions. The provider may also treat patients requiring extractions or management of oral lesions, consistent with their defined scope of practice and medical needs.

Major duties

The Staff Periodontist will provide both direct patient care and indirect patient care through supervision, oversight, and teaching of dental residents, ensuring adherence to clinical, educational, and safety standards. The Staff Periodontist must demonstrate sound clinical judgment and competency in patient care consistent with the Dental Service Standards of Care Manual. The provider consults specialists when cases exceed routine practice or personal experience and must adhere strictly to approved privileges. The provider is expected to treat patients, staff, and trainees with compassion, respect, and professionalism. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. The Staff Periodontist is privileged to perform the duties of a general dentist and a periodontal specialist, including but not limited to the following: Direct patient evaluation, diagnosis, and management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases Indirect patient care through resident supervision, treatment planning guidance, case review, and clinical instruction Comprehensive periodontal examinations, consultations, and treatment planning Complete occlusal adjustment Osseous grafts and resective periodontal surgery Soft tissue, autogenous palatal, and connective tissue grafts Root resective procedures Tooth extractions, including impactions associated with periodontal surgery Vestibuloplasty and frenectomy Surgical tooth exposure and perforation repair Nonsurgical management oftemporomandibular disorders Alveoloplasty Surgical removal of dentoalveolar osseous lesions and exostoses Ridge augmentation and contouring (hard and soft tissue) Intentional tooth replantation or transplantation Surgical placement, maintenance, and removal of osseointegrated dental implants Guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration (GTR, GBR) Minor tooth movement using fixed appliances Sinus augmentation associated with implant placement Moderate Sedation Competency: The Staff Periodontist may perform moderate (conscious) sedation in accordance with Medical Center policy, after demonstrating and maintaining competency through the required credentialing and privileging processes. Responsibilities include but not limited to the following: Safe administration and monitoring of moderate sedation Completion of all required sedation training, privileging, and ongoing competency assessments Ensuring proper documentation, informed consent, and adherence to sedation protocols Supervision of residents performing sedation within their approved scope Immediate management of sedation-related complications and activation of emergency protocols when needed Work Schedule: Full-time, permanent, Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 4:00pm This position will work at the following locations: WLA dental clinic, 3 days a week and the Los Angeles Outpatient dental clinic 2 days a week.

What you need to qualify

Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Board certified - American Board of Periodontology Certification/Diplomate American Board of Periodontology. Sedation permit from a state licensing board.
