Major duties
The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Texas has a vacancy for an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division in the Beaumont, Plano, Sherman, or Tyler, TX office. Attorneys in the Civil Division represent the United States, its agencies and their offices in both defensive and affirmative litigation. This position will be responsible for the litigation of claims involving, among other things, health care fraud, environmental matters, defense procurement fraud, torts, administrative enforcement actions, Touhy matters, prisoner litigation, housing and employment discrimination, and disability rights matters. The selected attorney will handle all aspects of investigations and cases, including gathering evidence, taking testimony, writing briefs, and appearing in court at hearings and trials. The attorney may also handle other types of cases as needed. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. As needed, additional positions may be filled using this announcement. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. What you need to qualify
Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree (or equivalent) and be an active member in good standing of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction). United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Hiring preference will be given to applicants with prior civil trial experience and those who have demonstrated the ability to litigate from the initial investigative stage through trial. Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case. Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills, as well as strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Applicants must possess excellent communication and courtroom skills and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
