Regulatory Scientific Reviewer (Animal Scientist)
What you'd do
This position is being filled under a stream-lined hiring authority, Title 21 of the United States Code (21 US Code 379d-3a) as amended by the 21st Century Cures Act of 2016, section 3072 and the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, Section 3624. The candidate selected for this position will serve under a career or career-conditional appointment and be paid under the provisions of this authority. This position is being recruited based on the Title 21 Pay Table 1, Band C (GS-13 equivalent).
Major duties
Serves as a technical authority in animal science and advises CVM staff, FDA staff, and other relevant parties on animal science and public health policies, regulations, and procedures that impact animal drugs, foods, and devices. Provides recommendations and animal science expertise to other review organizations and Center review scientists, CVM staff, and representatives of regulated industry. Uses specialized animal science principles and practices to review a variety of quality, clinical, scientific, and other data submitted in support of proposed animal drugs, foods, and devices, and provide recommendations and guidance to Center review organizations and review scientists, and the regulated industry. Maintains and applies animal science knowledge and experience to the assessment of new or marketed animal drugs, animal foods, medicated feeds, and devices to assure their safety, quality and/or effectiveness. Serves as a knowledgeable resource to CVM staff and other internal stakeholders (e.g., other government agencies, general public) regarding animal science, commercial animal production, animal nutrition, animal welfare, and/or related fields.
What you need to qualify
In order to qualify for the Regulatory Scientific Reviewer (Animal Scientist) position which falls under the 0487 occupational Series, you must meet the following requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 07/06/2026: Minimal Qualifications Requirements for the Regulatory Scientific Reviewer (Animal Scientist) AD-0487-00 Basic Qualification Requirements: . Education: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in quality assurance or a related degree in one or a combination of the following: consumer laws, biological sciences, food science, chemistry, pharmacy, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science, engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, legal investigations, law enforcement, or related scientific fields that provided knowledge directly related to consumer product reviewer work. AND/OR Experience: Professional experience in regulatory affairs, regulatory review, public health, consumer safety, medical product development, or healthcare policy. Experience includes reviewing submissions for FDA approval, evaluating manufacturing and quality systems, and/or enforcing compliance with FDA laws and standards. NOTE: Applicants must submit all relevant transcripts that demonstrate you possess the required education to meet the Basic Qualifications. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS OUTLINED ABOVE, APPLICANTS MUST ALSO MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BAND C. 1. No qualifying degree, have six (6) years of experience involving work: Reviewing scientific data and/or information and providing recommendations on the safety, effectiveness and/or utility of animal food products; and Ensuring scientific data and/or study protocols are in compliance with laws, regulations, and/or policies. OR 2. Have a bachelor's degree and also have four (4) years of comparable experience involving work Reviewing scientific data and/or information and providing recommendations on the safety, effectiveness and/or utility of animal food products; and Ensuring scientific data and/or study protocols are in compliance with laws, regulations, and/or policies. OR 3. Have a master's degree and also have three (3) years of comparable experience involving work Reviewing scientific data and/or information and providing recommendations on the safety, effectiveness and/or utility of animal food products; and Ensuring scientific data and/or study protocols are in compliance with laws, regulations, and/or policies. OR 4. Have a Doctorate and/or J.D. degree and also have one (1) years of comparable experience involving work: Reviewing scientific data and/or information and providing recommendations on the safety, effectiveness and/or utility of animal food products; and Ensuring scientific data and/or study protocols are in compliance with laws, regulations, and/or policies. OR 5. Have a MD, DO, DDS, DPM, or DVM degree.
