The primary purpose of this MACHINIST LEADER, WL-3414-11, is to lead three or more workers to accomplish trades and/or labor work on a substantially full time and continuing basis. The Leader is responsible to both perform the work assigned by a supervisor and ensures that subordinates completed assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards.

Major duties

Lead a team of three or more machinists and on a regular and recurring basis assists team members by instructing, demonstrating or providing instructions or training to team members as it relates to skill, knowledge and technical aspects of the shop. Perform journeyman level machinist operations on various aerospace components and other machining projects. Safely sets up and operates various conventional and CNC machines such as but not limited to vertical mills, horizontal mills, lathes, turret lathes, cylindrical grinders and internal grinders. Assist team members by instructing, demonstrating or providing instructions or training to accomplish the set up and operation of various aerospace components or machining projects on various conventional and CNC machines such as but not limited to vertical mills, horizontal mills, lathes, turret lathes, cylindrical grinders and internal grinders. Assist team members by instructing, demonstrating or providing instructions or training in the proper use and application of various precision measuring equipment such as but not limited to micrometers, test indicators, travel indicators, bore gages, gage blocks and ring gages.

What you need to qualify

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3400 Machine Tool Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is: the Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge, skill and ability in setting up and performing machining operations on various conventional and CNC machines such as but not limited to vertical mills, horizontal mills, lathes, turret lathes, cylindrical grinders and internal grinders. Knowledge, skill and ability in proficiently using various precision measuring equipment such as but not limited to micrometers, test indicators, travel indicators, bore gages, gage blocks and ring gages ensuring parts meet required specifications. Knowledge of and follows required safety, environmental, housekeeping and other established policies, procedures and practices related to the shop. Skill in assisting team members by instructing, demonstrating or providing instructions or training to accomplish the set up and operation of various conventional and CNC machines such as but not limited to vertical mills, horizontal mills, lathes, turret lathes, cylindrical grinders and internal grinders. Skill in assisting team members by instructing, demonstrating or providing instructions or training in the proper use and application of various precision measuring equipment such as but not limited to micrometers, test indicators, travel indicators, bore gages, gage blocks and ring gages. Skill in working with supervisor and team members to ensure team members are trained, work assignments are made by taking into consideration skills, machine capabilities and schedule requirements. Skill in assisting team members by instructing, demonstrating or providing instructions or training that covers required safety, environmental, housekeeping and other established policies, procedures and practices related to the shop. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Active lifting, carrying, holding, standing and walking. Heavy lifting up to 25 lbs., assisted lifting over 25 lbs. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside, exposed to hazards of moving equipment and machines, shop noise requiring hearing protection, eye hazards such as flying metal chips requiring safety glasses, handling heavy objects requiring use of safety shoes. Handling of objects that may have rough, abrasive, oily, sharp, hot or cold surfaces. Use of appropriate personal protective equipment required. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
