ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN - DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain, install, modify and repair Radar, Airfield and Weather Systems (RAWS) supporting test ranges and the National Airspace System. Maintains Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) system supporting National Weather Service and affiliated sites.
Major duties
Certifies all assigned systems and sub systems to ensure concurrence with USAF and FAA established standards and safety requirements. Determines when equipment malfunctions warrant shutdown of various systems. Maintains inspection and certification records as required by technical orders, applicable regulations, and operating instructions. Provides technical guidance, training and assistance to other technicians in all phases of job performance. Utilizes safety practices and procedures in performing assigned work by following established safety rules and regulations. Perform other duties as assigned.
What you need to qualify
Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower broadband NJ-02, equivalent to the next lower grade GS-08 or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience includes knowledge of a wide range of electronic principles and practices, operating parameters, capabilities and limitations of electronic systems associated with air traffic control and weather radar equipment. This experience must have included the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions. NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. OR EDUCATION: Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree that it is directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. Ideal Candidate: - Technical Mastery - Deep, hands-on expertise with complex radar, navigation, and weather systems, NEXRAD, ILS, VORTAC, STARS, ground-to-air radios. - Problem Solving - Must be comfortable using advanced test equipment, mathematical analysis, and system-level reasoning. - Judgment Under Pressure - Must know when a system is unsafe, when to notify controllers or command, and how to balance mission needs with safety requirements. - Collaborative Communication - Constant coordination with air traffic controllers, weather personnel, military & civilian leadership, and other technicians. They must document work clearly, train others, and represent the organization professionally. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Posses skill and knowledge of a wide range of electronic principles and practices; operating parameters, capabilities and limitations of electronic systems associated with air traffic control and weather radar equipment including but not limited to Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD), Instrument Landing System (ILS), VHF Omnirange/Tactical Air Navigation (VORTAC), Automated Weather Systems, Standard Terminal Automation Systems (STARS), ATC communications switch, digital recorders, and UHF/VHF ground to air radios. 2. Skill in the interpretation of technical data such as drawings, schematics, blueprints, and specifications of complete electronic systems; in analyzing problems in integrated/interfacing systems involving numerous complex circuits; and in using complex electronic and electromechanical test and measuring equipment using integrated test functions for different purposes. 3. Ability to modify standard procedures, adapt equipment or techniques, and make departures from previous approaches to solve technical problems or improve systems performance for highly complex electronic systems; to trace electronics logic from one system to another; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships to represent the organization in a professional manner. 4. Skill in using complex electronic and electromechanical test and measuring equipment using integrated test functions for different purposes. 5. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and practices. 6. Ability to use computer terminals to enter and extract data to maintain records and document actions. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
