What you'd do
This position is located in Seasonal Staffing Office-Pacific West Region, in the Building and Utilities Division. The selectee will perform recurring building and or utility and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Major duties
WG-4749-05 MAINTENANCE WORKER (TRAILS) MAJOR DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: Works under a trails maintenance leader or other higher-graded position. The position is primarily engaged in assisting in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails. Assists in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing and retainer walls. Removes windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs stepping-stones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed. Safely and effectively, uses hand power tools required for the job and has the ability to maintain these tools properly. May perform other duties such as: routine painting, carpentry, janitorial, cleaning, trash pick-up, grounds keeping, digging, raking, or sweeping; assisting in transporting camp and work supplies and construction materials; removal of snow and ice from trails and roads WG-4749-07 MAINTENANCE WORKER (TRAILS) MAJOR DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: Performs masonry work, primarily dry stone, in the construction, stabilization, and maintenance to historic and non-historic structures, mostly on the park trail system. Masonry tasks include the maintenance, repair, and construction of walls (both single- and multi-tier), bridge abutments, causeways, riprap trail tread and other similar structures, using primarily dry-stone techniques. In accordance with directions, quarries, cuts, shapes and finishes stone for use in walls, walkways, bridge abutments and aesthetically pleasing rock walls. Obtains and transports materials by human power, equipment (such as Bobcat loader), or rigging equipment such as a high-line setup. These tasks are normally performed under the direction of a higher- graded worker/leader/supervisor. Performs carpentry work. primarily using heavy log and rough-sawn lumber, on trail structures such as log checks, foot-bridges. multi-use bridges, corrals, hitch rails, and boardwalks. Log work tasks involve the use of a chain saw to fell, buck, notch, and/or shape both native and pressure treated logs in the maintenance and construction of multi-use and foot bridges, water bars and retainer steps, crib walls and steps.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT), Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading), Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment, Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc., Knowledge of materials, Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic), and Use of Measuring Instruments SCREENOUT MAINTENANCE WORKER; WG-4749-05: Perform complex work as a maintenance worker performing trail construction and maintenance including basic dry stone masonry skills for projects such as water bars, rock steps, retaining walls, etc; basic log carpentry skills to construct and repair trail bridges and foot logs, replace bridge decks, railings, stringers, and fences. I am able to fall trees and clear blowdowns and brush from roads and trails. I have used block, tackle, and winches for moving and placing heavy objects. My experience includes the use and maintenance of proper tools to complete the task. I am able to perform the strenuous work required by this position such as carrying heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds and hiking mountainous terrain up to 12 miles per day. I take initiative to solve difficult problems and can accomplish a variety of maintenance worker trail assignments independently and safely. SCREENOUT MAINTENANCE WORKER; WG-4749-07: Perform the most difficult and complex maintenance worker (trails) duties. This includes construction of multi-use bridges, stone stair cases, multi-tier retaining walls, causeways, and reroutes. I have utilized advanced rigging techniques using block, tackle and winch systems. I have used chainsaws to fall hazard trees, remove root balls, and clear fallen trees from trails. I have led others in the performance of such tasks as a regular part of my duties. I have extensive experience in trail maintenance and can operate and repair a variety of tools and equipment related to the tasks above. I take initiative to solve complex problems and can accomplish the most complex work assignments. I can lift and carry objects weighing more than 50 pounds.If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
