Major duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY As a Lead Technical Writer-Editor, you will use your knowledge and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by: Ensuring that the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values related to scientific publications and standards are communicated to the team and integrated into team strategies, goals, objectives, work plans, and work products and services. Writing, editing, and reviewing technical, high-visibility, high-priority technical and scientific publications, including scientific reports, research findings, scientific recommendations and guidelines, technical articles, and/or other materials on scientific or technical subjects. Identifying editorial priorities and balancing the workload for publication deadlines, adjusting in accordance with established priorities, to ensure timely completion of writing or editing assignments. Applying the principles, practices, methods, and techniques of English composition and technical editing, including logic, consistency of style, parallel construction, organization, and the effective use of transitions, and similar elements to restructure, revise, and rewrite scientific and public health materials for accuracy, clarity, understanding, and usability by the intended audience.

What you need to qualify

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Basic Qualifications: Education Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Must have included a total of 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field(s) covered by the position. For technical manuals and specifications writers or editors, the equivalent of 15 semester hours may have been gained through vocational or educational training above the high school level at a public, private, or Armed Forces school. OR Experience Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that required substantial subject-matter or technical knowledge of the field. This experience must have demonstrated the ability to acquire and present technical information through independent reading, interviews with subject-matter specialists, observation of tests and experiments, interpretation of blueprints or diagrams, or other appropriate methods. Such experience may have been acquired as a writer or editor of technical reports, articles, manuals, or specifications. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year of specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following: Leading the planning, writing, editing, and clearance of complex scientific and public health publications to include high-visibility journals, manuscripts, reports, and other publications, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with editorial standards, agency policies, and publication requirements. Providing editorial review, consultation, and guidance to multidisciplinary teams of scientists, epidemiologists, authors, reviewers, and subject matter experts, translating complex public health and surveillance data into clear, concise, and actionable scientific communications while maintaining scientific integrity and publication quality. Managing publication workflows and coordinating with authors, reviewers, and leadership to prioritize projects, resolve editorial issues, implement quality assurance processes, and ensure the timely dissemination of high-priority public health information. Exercising technical authority in scientific writing, editing, and publication practices by providing guidance and direction throughout the publication process to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of scientific findings to technical and non-technical audiences. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through national Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to gain employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
