What you'd do

This position is a Biologist, GS- 0401-12 working in Austin, TX or San Marcos, TX for the R2-Austin Ecological Services Field Office. Want to be in the vibrant Texas Hill Country? We are seeking a senior transportation biologist experienced with environmental challenges, good people and communication skills, and working knowledge of ESA section 7 policy and regulations. The position will join a team of 4 liaisons and coordinate on priority transportation projects statewide.

Major duties

As a Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following: The position will provide technical assistance and Endangered Species Act section 7 consultation to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on behalf of the Federal Highway Administration under an interagency agreement for priority transportation actions. The employee will work collaboratively with USFWS field offices and state agency staff to address transportation actions across the state of Texas. Duties may include producing programmatic consultation documents, developing species determination-keys, and other efficient and effective consultation and coordination actions with TxDOT as assigned.

What you need to qualify

Only experience and education obtained by 07/28/2026 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification. Basic Requirement: A degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR A combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualification GS-12 One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Qualifying experience includes: (1) conducting complex biological or ecological investigations to determine the impact of various projects upon endangered species and their habitats; (2) negotiating alternative actions or mitigation measures, etc.; (3) developing habitat conservation or restoration projects; (4) serving as a technical advisor on the Endangered Species Act for other staff, government agencies, land owners, private interest groups, etc.; (5) preparing biological portions of environmental assessment/impact statements or comprehensive resource planning reports; and (6) implementing federal environmental laws, regulations, and policies involving natural resource issues. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information in these areas to be found qualified. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time In Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet both eligibility and qualification requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the JOA. Specifically, i.
