What you'd do

This position is located within the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service, Prosthetic Treatment Center, at the Denver VA Medical Center. The incumbent independently performs diagnostic testing, preventive maintenance, repair, modification, adjustment, and evaluation of manual and powered mobility equipment, including wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers issued to Veterans through Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service. The incumbent reports directly to the Wheelchair Team Unit Supervisor.

Major duties

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Diagnostics and Repair The incumbent independently performs diagnostic testing, preventive maintenance, repair, modification, assembly, adjustment, and operational testing of manual and powered wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, and related mobility equipment issued through Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS). Interprets technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications to diagnose malfunctions and determine appropriate repair methods for electrical, electronic, and mechanical mobility equipment systems. Utilizes voltmeters, ohmmeters, multi-meters, circuit testers, battery chargers, automatic test equipment (ATE), and other diagnostic tools in accordance with technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications to identify malfunctions and repair electrical and electronic systems. Repairs, rebuilds, modifies, assembles, and tests electrical equipment and components for powered mobility devices, including DC motors, electronic controllers, drive assemblies, switches, gears, clutches, bearings, seals, armatures, batteries, charging system components, and related mechanical and electrical systems. Performs troubleshooting and repair of electrical and electronic components utilizing technical data, testing equipment, and diagnostic procedures to identify defective or malfunctioning parts and restore equipment to proper operating condition. Independently determines appropriate troubleshooting methods, repair procedures, replacement requirements, and repair feasibility based on equipment condition, technical evaluation, safety considerations, and manufacturer specifications. Performs operational and safety inspections on mobility equipment prior to issuance. Conducts pretest and final checkout procedures to verify equipment functionality and compliance with safety standards. Equipment Modification and Fabrication Adjusts and calibrates electronic controls for wheelchair and scooter operation, including hand, head, and chin controls, based on manufacturer specifications and patient functional requirements. Fabricates, modifies, and installs adaptive components and specialized equipment for manual and powered mobility devices to support safe and effective Veteran mobility. Adjusts restrictive devices such as belts, straps, supports, and braking systems to ensure proper equipment function and patient safety. Technical Consultation and Equipment Support Provides technical consultation to clinical staff regarding wheelchair functionality, equipment modifications, repair feasibility, adaptive equipment adjustments, and equipment performance. Determines whether repairs are economically feasible based on equipment condition, repair requirements, replacement costs, and safety considerations. Recommends replacement or condemnation of equipment when repairs are not practical or when safety concerns exist. Inventory and Documentation Maintains inventories of wheelchair parts, mobility equipment components, batteries, charging components, and re-issuable equipment. Identifies reusable equipment and components suitable for reissue or parts recovery in accordance with VA regulations and cost-containment practices. Coordinates with Prosthetic staff and clinical personnel regarding equipment availability, replacement needs, and equipment disposition per VA regulations. Utilizes Prosthetic VistA, CPRS, and related systems to document repairs, materials used, labor, costs, serial numbers, and services provided within established timeframes. Safety and Infection Control Cleans and sanitizes equipment utilizing approved cleaning procedures and infection control requirements prior to repair and reissue. Sanitizes mobility equipment in accordance with local Infection Control policies and Joint Commission standards relating to durable medical equipment. Follows fire safety procedures, hazardous material handling guidelines, shop safety protocols, and proper storage requirements for flammable materials, tools, equipment, and supplies. Moves and transports powered mobility devices and related equipment using safe material handling procedures. Performs additional duties as assigned. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/22/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Ability to Use Electrical Drawings Knowledge of Electrical Equipment Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Theory and Instruments (Electrical, Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices Troubleshooting (Electrical) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires prolonged standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and working in awkward positions while repairing, modifying, cleaning, and transporting mobility equipment. Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment components, batteries, and wheelchair parts weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Assists with movement and positioning of mobility equipment and may assist Veterans during equipment adjustments and transfers. Work is primarily performed in a wheelchair repair shop and clinical support environment where the incumbent is exposed to electrical equipment, moving mechanical parts, dirt, grease, dust, cleaning agents, and potential hazards associated with repair equipment and tools. The incumbent follows established OSHA requirements, infection control procedures, shop safety practices, and fire safety regulations pertaining to the operation, maintenance, and repair of durable medical equipment.
