Accounting Technician
What you'd do
This position is located within the fiscal service office supporting accounting operations for the Nebraska Western Iowa Health Care System mission based on guidance from the Veterans Integrated Service Network Headquarters.
Major duties
Incumbent works as part of a team of professionals tasked to ensure the accuracy of accounting records. Executes these duties by developing procedures, resolving technical problems, monitoring the timely recording of transactions and reconciling accounts with manual and computer subsidiary accounts. The Accountant actively supports the Chief Finance Officer and/or the Supervisory Accountant by duties including the following: Analyzes current and/or required accounting procedures to design new or improved processes to ensure compliance with respect to regulatory requirement. Conducts quality assurance reviews of existing and proposed accounting processes to ensure financial integrity and conformance to federal laws, Veterans Administration regulations and guidelines. Reviewing reports to identify correct accounting strings for obligations, liquidating undelivered orders, establishing payables. Analyzes rejected and accepted documents needing corrections for proper payment or accounting records. Completes monthly reconciliations for local and station requirements that are reported to Accountability offices at Higher Headquarters. Facilitates and performs monthly follow-up requirements with contracting and service lines to ensure invoices and obligations are being monitored and paid timely. Provides fiscal support and communication with customers in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner. Participates in training to ensure knowledge of financial methods, practices, procedures, regulations, and other guidelines are always met while promoting personal and professional growth. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm Telework: This position may be authorized for telework. What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/22/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify for GS-06 based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position. Specialized experience includes: Preforms transactions in VA systems.; Performs reconciliations of accounts.; Administers customer service. You may qualify for GS-07 based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position. Specialized experience includes: Preforms transactions in VA systems such as FMS, VISTA, MAXIMO and VPFS.; Performs reconciliations of accounts such as PFOP, GPF, CWT, Equipment, Bank, Purchase Card, Substation Corrections, and/or UDO.; Administers customer service to leadership at the VA.
