Maintenance Mechanic
What you'd do
Incumbent will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic in the Engineering Service at the Oklahoma City VA Healthcare System. He/she will perform the duties of a fully trained construction specialist, performing various tasks from written and oral instructions. Work consists of reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, and drawings and performing material takeoffs for ordering various sizes of projects.
Major duties
Work consists of, but is not limited to: Processing work assignments and is normally free to use own judgment and initiative in completing assignments. Maintenance Mechanic must use his/her own initiative on maintenance and repair work to identify malfunctions or non-functions, then proceed with corrective action. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed, estimated materials required, selects best work methods, techniques and trade practices and accomplishes the repair or overhaul. Independently diagnoses, plans and completes projects or work orders involving routine repairs.. Responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures. Performs walk through inspections of buildings and initiates electronic work orders for deficiencies found. Knowledgeable at a journeyman level to operate power tools such as gasoline powered trowel machine, concrete vibrators, jack hammers, mixers, masonry saws, and hand tools such as floats, trowels, screeds, shovels, rakes, chisels, Georgia buggies, horizontal and vertical milling machine, lathes, power and hand drill presses, band, radial arm, reciprocating, circular, miter, table, tile, brick, concrete, and cut off saws; power planes, welders, power shapers, jointers, routers, sanders; cordless and hammer drills; jack hammers, concrete vibrators, floats and trowels; powder actuated guns; ability to operate heavy equipment such as a backhoe Measures, cuts and constructs using standard building materials. Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc. Performs work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials using typical shop mathematics for complex and exact projects. Must be able to interpret blueprints, sketches, manufacturers' specifications, and technical manuals, and be knowledgeable in shop math and standard formulas. Repairing and replacing parts of bedside stands, cabinets, and hospital equipment Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation, of systems and equipment. Uses tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, and lead pots. Is responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures. Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Troubleshoots circuits, controls and systems to locate, repair and replace defective components. Must be skilled in the use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required. Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Operate and use a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications. Plans measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques. Define repairs/upgrades and define required materials (bill of materials), tools and equipment requirements. Repairs plumbing systems. Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems. Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc. Performs work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials using typical shop mathematics for complex and exact projects. Measures, cuts and constructs using standard building material. What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/27/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. PERFERRED EXPERIENCE: Candidate must have a minimum of 1 year experience as a commercial carpenter. Candidate must be capable of drywall installation/removal, suspended and drywall ceiling layout/installation, concrete floor prep and leveling, LVT installation/removal, metal stud layout/installation, commercial metal door frame layout/installation, and demolition of these same items. Candidates that possess verifiable experience as a team or job-site commercial carpenter leader. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires strenuous exertion in building, removing or replacing walls, floors; requires standing for long period of time, working in heated or cold areas. Incumbent must work on ladders, scaffolds, and roofs while sitting, kneeling, standing or stooping in an awkward position Must handle heavy tools (i.e. drills at arm's length and overheat from time to time). Must unload from trucks and place on storage racks such heavy and bulky materials as plywood, wallboard, hardboard, and other types of lumber and materials. Must work throughout all areas of Medical Center. In some cases, incumbent must go in out-of-the-way areas such as boiler/mechanical rooms, pipe chases, roofs, attics, basement, etc. which may require kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, etc. Frequently handles objects weighing 10 - 90 pounds. Project demands may require work at other than normal administrative hours.Some work is performed in the shop areas. Incumbent is required to work in close, tight areas at times. Incumbent is exposed to hazards of working from heights, falling materials, steam and hot water lines, sometimes exposed to electrical shocks. Subject to working out in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures and in confined dusty and dirty areas. Work is usually done in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Outdoor work is normally done in good weather. May occasionally work in dirty, dusty, hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, and serious burns caused by electrical shock, high voltage, and hot components while working around equipment. At times, works around extremely high noise and vibration sources. Work in ward areas around sick patients. May be called upon to work overtime and call-back in cased o emergencies. The ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures, confined, dusty, dirty areas, and hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics preferred but not mandatory.
