Bioprocessing Specialist
What you'd do
NIST is seeking a Bioprocessing Specialist to lead innovative cell-monitoring and bioprocessing strategies for iPSCs within the NIST Prototype Bioprocessing Laboratory. This will drive industry impact by establishing external collaborations and leading standards development. Responsibilities include designing experiments and interpreting large datasets. This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Major duties
NIST's Biosystems and Biomaterials Division is focused on advancing measurement science and technology to accelerate translation and commercialization of emerging biotechnologies, including engineering biology, in support of the bioeconomy. Working with industry and other partners, our multi-disciplinary teams develop metrology and data-driven standards, reference materials, reference data, and protocols by integrating state-of-the-art automation, analytical methods, and ML/AI as platforms for innovation and standardization. Within this division, the Cell Systems Science Group conducts research in measurements and models that support the understanding of complex biological phenomena at the cellular and subcellular level. The group focuses on the cell as a system and tools that can make measurements and characterize the system properties. As a bioprocessing specialist within this group, you will: Develop and lead stem cell culture experiments (iPSC) Design data collection experiments from advanced instruments Identify high impact projects aligned with nist mission
What you need to qualify
Basic Requirements Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. To qualify at the ZP-IV level: In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-12 level (ZP-III at NIST) or equivalent. Specialized experience is defined as experience in at least three of the following areas: Experience in stem cell and other cell culture process, experience in cell culture process control measurements for cell expansion and bioprocess control, Experience in cellular measurement methods including microscopy, flow cytometry, RNA and DNA screen tools, and Experience bioprocessing laboratories management and laboratory information management systems (LIMS). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
