Transportation Assistant
What you'd do
The Veterans Transportation Program (VTP)/Beneficiary Travel (BT) department administers beneficiary travel program benefits to Veterans who meet eligibility criteria. Staff review, adjudicate and authorize claims for costs incurred while traveling from their home to a VA medical appointment at the Portland VA Medical Center.
Major duties
***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major Duties: Assists Veterans with waiver applications when Veteran has experienced a major change in income for the current year or is requesting deductible be waived due to financial hardship. Coordinates patient transfer with other VA ensuring the patient arrives at a specified time for admission. Properly annotates travel arrangement in patient record and when needed sends Veteran travel itinerary. Makes travel arrangements from basic information from the traveler enroute to resolve problems. Continually assess the status of the Beneficiary Travel program through the use of quality assurance measurement tools to ensure compliance with existing directives, guidelines and regulations. Arranges all modes of transportation via Veterans Transportation Service (VTS), air ambulance, commercial air, taxi, ambulance, bus and/or independent transports. Corresponds with physicians, travelers, and vendor to determine the most dependable and economical mode of transportation. Prepares appropriate documentation and/or scheduling for travelers according to government transportation availability, government rates or substantial rates. Collects, organizes, tracks and count all beneficiary travel reimbursement forms from various locations throughout the facility. Orders office supplies for the section and will be responsible for tracking and organizing orders. This task also includes budget tracking, researching specialty items and contacting vendors for item availability. Perform all duties as assigned. What you need to qualify
For GS-6: Possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-5 in Federal service that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience is organizing and maintaining documentation and records supporting beneficiary travel reimbursements and vendor payments; possessing of validation, control and maintaining accounting records for many travel accounts and making frequent dollar amount adjustments of those accounts; ensuring compliance with procedures for obligating travel funds. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
