Motor Vehicle Operator
What you'd do
This position is located in the Martinsburg VA Medical Center (MVAMC), in the Facility Management Service Transportation Section and is responsible for transporting patients to all outings requiring the use of a motor coach.
Major duties
Operates and performs operator maintenance on a 42 passenger motor coach that exceeds 32,000 lbs. a gross vehicle weight. Transports patients, and Dom members to all outings requiring the use of motor coach. This includes trips to Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD, as well as other locations as required by the Recreation department. Loads and unloads wheelchair passengers using an electric or manual wheelchair lift. Assists passengers, with special needs, on and off motor coach. Operates buses, sedans, SUVs, ambulance, passenger vans and pickup trucks. Transports sick, injured or convalescent patients and is responsible for their comfort and safe conduct to destination. Loads and unloads the vehicle of equipment and ambulatory or wheelchair patients. Performs messenger tasks and parcel pickup and may carry funds for purchase of items or drugs. Duties which may be expected when not operating the vehicles described above are grass cutting, snow removal, road clean-up, general labor duties, etc., as directed by the Motor Vehicle Operator Supervisor. Responsible for keeping the vehicle clean inside and out and checks and tops fuel levels prior to departures and upon returning. Selects the safest, most direct and legally allowed route to be followed and identifies alternative routes which may be used if emergency situations arise. Operates motor coach vehicle on interstate highways, winding roads and steep grades. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/29/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Exerts moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of passengers, both ambulatory and wheelchair, when loading and unloading. Exerts considerably physical effort to change tires and make emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replace an electric fuse on open highways.
