What you'd do

The position serves as a Maintenance Worker with Facilities Management. Performs demolition, renovation, maintenance and repair of structures, buildings, related fixtures, and utilities throughout the Medical Center. Performs numerous tasks which are dissimilar in kind, but which have in common the purpose of completing the work of one or more trade persons on the team.

Major duties

VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is an integrated tertiary health care system comprised of two hospitals, the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro and the Nashville VA Medical Center, as well as 21 outpatient clinics located in middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. TVHS provides ambulatory care, primary care, and secondary care in acute medicine and surgery, specialized tertiary care, transplant services, spinal cord injury outpatient care, and a full range of extended care and mental health services. More than 146,000 Veterans in middle Tennessee, southern Kentucky, and northern Georgia trust VA TVHS for their health care needs. TVHS is the seventh largest VA medical center system in the nation serving roughly 75 counties with robust research and development, health care innovation, and more. Middle Tennessee offers an abundance of entertainment such as historic music venues, NFL Titans and NHL Predators, recreational activities, and natural sceneries ideal for any individual. Additionally, Tennessee does not have state taxes making the area more attractive to high-quality candidates. The Maintenance Worker's duties will include, but are not limited to: Maintenance and repair to building service equipment/systems - domestic water system, sprinkler system, steam distribution/production system, medical gas system, heating and cooling systems, plumbing fixtures and systems, chill water distribution systems. Maintenance and repair to personal property equipment/systems - laundry equipment, nutrition and food equipment, internal combustion engines, air compressors, pumps, valves, and grounds maintenance equipment. Installation of shelving, bulletin boards, coat hangers, mirrors, door closers, door stops, assembly of furniture, etc. Prepare surfaces and installation of floor and/or wall tile. Perform preventive maintenance of fixed and/or movable mechanic systems. Read and follow blueprints and/or schematics. Maintain knowledge of building codes/standards and their application in a healthcare setting. Assemble furniture. Replace ceiling tile. Maintain service rooms to include painting. Possess full knowledge of mathematics as required to perform assigned tasks. Use all hand and power operated equipment necessary to complete the tasks assigned such as hammer drills, core drills, auger machines, pipe threaders, etc. Use and recognize the need for personal protective equipment. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00AM-3:30PM Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD04929A Physical Requirements: The duties of this position require physical exertion involving lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes. Physical effort is exerted in walking, running, climbing, crawling, and bending. Incumbent is required to work on scaffolds and ladders. Strain related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching, or stooping for extended periods of time.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measuring Instruments Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
