What you'd do
Our work inspires a nation. We are the artisans, historians, and craftspeople who preserve and maintain the landmark buildings, monuments, art and grounds of the Capitol campus.This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings and Grounds (LBG), Tenant Services Division, Projects Branch, Wood Crafting Section. The Wood Crafter is responsible for providing complete wood crafting services for various construction and renovation projects throughout the LBG.
Major duties
Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm As a Wood Crafter, you will make and repair high grade wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture and decorative woodwork including items that feature intricate and precise details such as curved and contoured surfaces, book-matched panels, scrollwork, friezes, inlays, and complex joints. Duties include: Selecting, cutting, turning, shaping, joining, bonding, fitting, assembling, and decorating wooden materials and parts. Using the full range of hand and power woodworking tools, machines, and techniques to create superior and structurally reliable wood work which requires exact fitting, close weight, pressure, and size tolerances to construct specialty furniture. Planning and laying out work from specifications, blueprints, rough sketches, and verbal instructions. Performing routine maintenance on equipment, including lubricating machines, changing, and sharpening saw blades and adjusting drive belt tensions. Performs other related duties as assigned.
What you need to qualify
You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position. Ability to perform journey-level wood crafting without more than normal supervision to include: Constructing, altering, repairing, and modifying building items and structures (e.g., wood and metal stud wall framework, suspended ceilings, doors, door frames, finished paneling, windows, countertops); with accuracy, proper spacing, and precise fit to ensure structural soundness and quality appearance. Planning and laying out work from specifications, blueprints, rough sketches, and verbal instructions.
