Major duties
Duties are as follows: Responsible for planning, design and construction of new and renovation/rehabilitation, repair, or modernization of existing park buildings and facilities. Assignments involve performance of office and field engineering duties associated with in-house design development, architectural/engineering review, managing A/E contracts, and/or monitoring and managing construction projects with diverse climatic, geographic, and environmental conditions. Applies the latest design and construction techniques to such projects as drainage systems, roads, piers, docks, boardwalks, wastewater collection, treatment and disposal/reuse facilities, and potable water supply, treatment and distribution facilities. Other projects include renovation and construction of various types of structures, such as administrative, housing, office buildings, visitor centers, maintenance facilities, laboratories, parking facilities, campgrounds, storage facilities, and entrance stations. Investigates, formulates, and evaluates project data; conducts investigations of project site. Develops complete working drawings, including floor plans, interior and exterior elevations, sections, to include scale and full-size details of park facilities and structures. Evaluates design and construction objectives, identifies most economical and efficient procedures for building or facility repair, renovation, design, and construction, including in-house design, coordinating with other architects and/or engineers in coverage of all technical areas, resolving overlapping responsibilities among technical disciplines concerning attention to design, and meeting total facility objectives and schedules. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. * Incumbents will be required to obtain and maintain a FAC-COR II level certification within 2 years placement into the position. Requirements Continued... Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1-5 (dependent on park; see Duties section) nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Incumbent(s) will be required to obtain and maintain a FAC-COR II level certification within 2 years placement into the position. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/13/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. For the GS-0810 series: Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a Bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: 1. Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions. 2. Written Test -- Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. 3. Specified academic courses -- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A. 4. Related curriculum -- Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions. For the GS-12 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-11 level. Examples of specialized experience: Directing and participating in the preparation of studies, designs, cost estimate, specifications and modifications for engineering projects (bridges, roads, buildings, culverts, water and wastewater systems, and other public works systems); Performing field work including site investigations, data gathering, and inspections issuing corrective action for observed deficiencies, conducting surveillance activities and administering construction contracts; Formulating and tracking budgets; and Coordinating projects or agreements with external groups such as Federal and state agencies or private organizations. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
