What you'd do
This position is located in Flagstaff Area National Monuments, in the Division of Resource Stewardship and Science.
Major duties
Provides overall professional and technical direction for the cultural resources program, including technical guidance for the pre-contact masonry preservation program on complex preservation issues. Makes recommendations to management regarding cultural resource preservation. Supervises three permanent career seasonal employees and up to six archeological technician seasonal staff, interns, or volunteers; but less than 25% of the time. Creates and implements short-term and long-term cultural resources planning documents and projects. Acquires and administers project funds by preparing project proposals, developing scopes of works, and tracking budgets. Prepares and reviews technical and scientific reports on cultural resource projects and programs. Develops and maintains effective working relations with other NPS staff, partners, agencies, associated tribes, and the public. Area Information: Flagstaff Area National Monuments consists of Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments. Wupatki is approximately 35 miles north, Sunset Crater Volcano is 8 miles north, and Walnut Canyon is 8 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona. Flagstaff has a population of approximately 75,000 and an elevation of 7,000 ft. Summers in Flagstaff are warm with temperatures normally in the 75-85F range and a monsoon/thunderstorm season. Winters are cold, with low temperatures in the teens and snow averaging around 90-100 inches per season. Flagstaff offers complete medical, dental and shopping services, along with excellent educational opportunities at Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College. Finding affordable housing in Flagstaff can be challenging and may be limited. The surrounding high desert, mountains and lakes, other national park units, and national forest lands provide many varied recreational opportunities.

Requirements Continued... Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. Agreements Technical Representative certification within 6 months of Entrance on Duty. Contracting Officer's Representative Level 1 certification within 1 year of Entrance on Duty. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service. Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/06/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. All applicants must meet the basic requirement for a GS-0193 Archeologist position via one of the three methods listed below. If qualifying based on education you must provide transcripts. Basic Requirement for GS-0193-11 Archeologist: EDUCATION: I have a degree that included 3 semester hours in each of the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND six semester hours of related course work in: Geography, geology, or cultural geography; History, historiography, or historical archeology; Environmental studies; Scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or Surveying; AND Archeological field school. *NOTE* RELATED CURRICULUM: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements above (including archeological field school). -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in "education" above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. -OR- EXPERIENCE: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. In addition, to qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: conducting archeological site inventories; completing preservation maintenance of archeological sites; preparing archaeological reports; using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) or Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to record archaeological site and features; and conducting Section 106 inventory and monitoring projects. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You must include transcripts. -OR- SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. To combine experience and education, first take the number of months of full-time specialized experience possessed and divide by 12. Multiply the resulting decimal by 100. Then, take the total number of graduate level credits in excess of 36 and divide by 18, multiply the resulting decimal by 100. Finally, add the two percentages together, the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
