This vacancy is for a GS - 1801 - 12, Marine Inspector located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, SECTOR PUGET SOUND INSPECTIONS DIVISION in SEATTLE, Washington.
Major duties
You will serve as a Marine Inspector and be responsible for providing technical expertise and leadership in the enforcement of marine safety, vessel inspection, pollution prevention, vessel manning, regulations, treaties, and international conventions. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Conducting reviews of vessel's plans, safety management systems and operating systems to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards. Inspecting all navigation, intra-vessel communication, alarm, lifesaving, fire fighting, and pollution prevention systems on vessels to ensure that they are operating properly and in compliance with national and international standards. .Inspecting a vessel's hull, and machinery to ensure they are in compliance with safety as well as design, installation, and operational standards. Identifying hazardous conditions, noting violations of vessel specifications and operational technology and prescribing acceptable methods of correcting these conditions. Ensuring inspection documentation is prepared and appropriate orders drafted specifying any required changes, repairs or operational limitation for vessels and equipment. Leading complex vessel inspections and conducting training, assessing inspection qualifications, and formally certifying on-the-job training for junior Marine Inspectors. What you need to qualify
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis. Boarding and checking ships, barges, and tugboats to ensure they meet safety standards; Ensuring ships handle hazardous cargo safely and do not violate pollution or clean water laws. Verifying that lifeboats, firefighting systems, and emergency communication gear are properly maintained and operational. Enforcing domestic and international maritime laws, safety management systems, and environmental protection regulations. Checking crew licenses, vessel logs, and cargo manifests to confirm they meet legal and maritime commerce requirements. Training junior marine inspectors, reviewing their casework, and leading multi-person inspection teams.
