This vacancy is for a GS-1801-11, Commercial Fishing Vessel Examiner located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, SECTOR PUGET SOUND INSPECTIONS DIVISION in SEATTLE, Washington.
Major duties
You will serve as a Commercial Fishing Vessel Examiner and be responsible for providing commercial fishing vessel (CFV) examination services, technical expertise, advanced training, and project leadership in the enforcement of marine safety, pollution prevention, security, and vessel manning laws, regulations, treaties, and applicable international conventions. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Conducting technical reviews to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards. Determining that vessels to be examined have the proper documents and certificates on board and in effect. Examining all required navigation, communication, alarm lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention systems to ensure that they are operating properly and in compliance with applicable standards. Assigning inspection/examination activities to others in response to requests from the maritime industry. What you need to qualify
To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis. Ensuring fishing vessels have all required legal documentation (such as Certificates of Documentation or State Registrations) and checking that hull markings, load lines, and electrical or machinery installations comply with Coast Guard regulations. Checking that vessels are equipped with properly registered emergency position indication radio beacons, survival craft, immersion suits, life rings, fire extinguishers, and functional visual distress signals. Educating the commercial fishing vessel community on maritime safety regulations.
