MACHINIST LDR
What you'd do
You will serve as a MACHINIST LEADER in the Mechanical Shop, Shop 931 of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Major duties
You will lead over employees that are the rate of Machinist WG-10, Machine Tool Operator WG-09, Machinist (WSPP) WG-08 and Machinist Helper WG-05. You will use shop mathematics to make necessary calculations. You will check to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. You will see to it that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is available from supply locations. You will work with trainees by demonstrating to them their knowledge of the skill via On the Job Experience (OJE).

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE - Instructing Machinists, Machine Tool Operators, Helpers, and Apprentices (Machinists), on proper work procedures and methods, use of tools, and safety pertaining to shop trade skills. - Training on utilizing shop training tools, such as mock-ups, in shop work areas or facilities, as appropriate, and on deck plates. - Answering questions for other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. - Using precision measuring instruments, such as depth gauges, calipers, and verniers. - Reading blueprints, specifications, sketches, technical manuals, and test memos.
