Electronics Industrial Controls Mechanic

The Journeyman Electronics Industrial Controls Mechanic will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and operations of all Industrial Controls systems throughout the OVAHCS, to include the Lake Baldwin and Lake Nona campus and CBOCs. VA employees may be required to work irregular tours of duty, including evenings and weekends in order to conduct the VA's mission. Employees will be assigned to work during emergency situations by supervisor dependent on Facility needs.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work performed by the employee requires significant physical effort and endurance. Industrial Control Mechanics at this grade level are frequently required to perform repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard-to-reach locations. The work involves standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing for extended periods, often in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee must have the ability to remain on their feet for long durations, including while staging materials and performing overhead or elevated tasks. Industrial Control Mechanics frequently lift and carry tools, equipment and parts weighing up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds), and occasionally up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). In some instances, they may be required to lift or move moderately heavy objects weighing more than 18 kilograms (over 40 pounds), for which assistance will be requested to prevent injury. The employee must use appropriate body mechanics and request help when necessary to ensure personal and workplace safety. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a variety of environments, both indoors and outdoors and often under challenging or adverse conditions. The employee may be required to perform repairs and installations during inclement weather and in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, greasy or poorly ventilated. Tasks may involve working at elevated heights on scaffolding or cranes up to 9 meters (30 feet) or more, as well as in confined spaces such as manholes, attics, crawlspaces and sub-basements. The employee will be assigned to either the ride-out team or recovery team during hurricanes or other extreme weather events. The employee is occasionally exposed to potential hazards, including falls, electrical shock, burns and contact with rotary equipment such as motors. There is frequent risk of cuts, abrasions and bruises and the employee may be exposed to unsanitary conditions when working around sewer systems, waste traps or contaminated drainage lines. In certain work areas, particularly those with suspected or known asbestos contamination and air and blood borne pathogens requiring the employee to wear a respirator and protective disposable clothing, including coveralls and protective gear for the eyes, head, hands and feet. Adherence to all applicable safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements is mandatory to minimize health and safety risks. PPE may be required to include a respirator/PAPR as to protect against potential air or bloodborne pathogens.
