Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic

This position is located at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/09/2025. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to perform repairs by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components. Additionally, they should be capable of assisting higher-level heavy mobile equipment mechanics in disassembling, repairing, and reassembling major systems, components, and operating mechanisms. Evidence of this potential can be shown through work, training, or education that establishes proficiency in these repair tasks. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c). SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements. The screen-out element(s) for this position is/are: Ability to do the job without more than normal supervision. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Requires moderate to heavy lifting in moving and raising objects up to 80 pounds. Necessitates working in strained and uncomfortable positions frequently. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Working on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. The incumbent may frequently work on top of equipment at heights of 10 feet or more and underneath vehicles by use of a creeper etc. Working Conditions: Working indoors most of the time, but occasionally on maintenance yard or field, exposed to changing temperatures. Is also exposed to dirt, grease, grime, noise and fumes. Work is performed on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy, and subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Must follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
