Pipefitter

The incumbent of this position is a Sprinkler System Mechanic/Pipefitter in Engineering Service at the VA Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) Columbus, Ohio Incumbent installs, maintains, repairs and tests plumbing fixtures, water supply lines, drain lines, steam generating and using equipment, the steam distribution and condensate return system. Duties also include the installing, maintaining, repairing and testing of the building sprinkler system, fire hydrants, and the site sprinkler system.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The incumbent makes repairs and installations while stooping, kneeling, and working with hands over head, lifting, and using arm muscles tightening connections. There is a considerable amount of dexterity required in performing caulking, joining and fitting and repacking valves, installing unit heaters, repairing steam condensate and hot water pumps. The incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally the incumbent may lift and carry items that weight over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: The incumbent is subject to such hazardous conditions as: working in damp places in water and/or mud in close quarters inside and outside infection from unsanitary work sites such as sewers, grease traps and waste traps; injury while using power operated pipe threaders and bending machines; broken bones, cuts and bruises while working with wrenches and heavy pipes; abnormal heat while working on steam lines; working around neuropsychiatric, TB patients and patients with other possible communicable diseases.
