Qualifications
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in an office environment with exposure to everyday risks and discomforts, including a storage-type area with tall shelves used for filing legislative documents, and requires the use of normal safety precautions. Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and carrying items weighing up to 25 pounds, as well as regular use of typical office equipment, software programs, and methods of communication such as a computer, email, telephone, and photocopier. Must demonstrate physical mobility and manual dexterity for shelving and retrieval of materials from storage shelves. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required for performance of duties. Work also requires physical presence in the office, except as otherwise required by the Office of the Secretary of the Senate. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Work requires a high school diploma or GED, with one to three years of relevant experience; and the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of legislative research services, programs, and products. Knowledge of the legislative process and current legislation. Basic knowledge of the Senate as an institution preferred, with a desire and willingness to learn more about the legislative process, as well as the history and operation of the Senate. Skill in operating a motor vehicle. Ability to obtain clearance for access to White House and State Department. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to use a computer and relevant computer software programs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Senate staff, other government agencies, and the public. Ability to provide prompt and courteous customer service. Ability to deal with others, using tact and diplomacy. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to follow departmental rules, regulations, procedures, and functions. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Valid driver’s license with safe driving record.
