What you'd do

You will serve as a Carpenter in the Public Works Directorate of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Major duties

You will produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance. You will mill heavy lumber, cut bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints, and apply plastic laminates to wood and other surfaces, e.g., counter tops, desk tops, etc. You will interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently. You will repair a variety of common metal office furniture and equipment, to include, but not limited to desks, chairs and filing cabinets. You will work with a large variety of hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, veneers, wood substitutes, gluing and bonding agents. You will install door and window sashes and apply caulking, compound, or other filler material around door and window casings and at other points where tight seal is required. You will disassemble, replace, or remove worn or damaged items such as rollers, latches, hinges, damaged desk and tabletops, bent or crooked arms and legs. You will construct and repair a wide variety of structural items such as, building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, and interior and exterior trim.

What you need to qualify

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to perform the work of a Carpenter without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Constructing and repairing wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close fit and structural soundness; 2) Interpreting blueprints to determine the layout and work sequences of construction projects; AND 3) Operating power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, sanders, routers, combustion type saws, drill presses and table saws.
