PROGRAM ANALYST (MILITARY FAMILY & VETERAN PROGRAMS)
What you'd do
This position is part of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The incumbent will drive policies to improve quality of life for military families and veterans. Oversight includes family readiness, education, child/youth services, transition assistance, wounded warrior/caregiver support, economic security, spouse employment, total force fitness, and abuse prevention.
Major duties
As a PROGRAM ANALYST (MILITARY FAMILY & VETERAN PROGRAMS) at the GS-0343-14 some of your typical work assignments may include: Serves as the principal point of contact, subject matter expert, and action officer for the JS on military family and veteran issues. Develops the Joint Staff's official position and responses to Presidential, Congressional, and public correspondence on a variety of issues relating to military family and veteran programs and policies. Applies innovative, interdisciplinary quantitative and qualitative approaches and analysis to dealing with military family readiness issues and program effectiveness affecting total force readiness. Reviews Service Program Objective Memorandum (POM) and Office of the Secretary of Defense Program Budget Decisions (PBDs) to determine military family readiness impacts. Reviews pending legislation and submits legislative appeals and recommends Joint Staff positions on key military family and veteran issues to inform the Statement of the Administration Policy.
What you need to qualify
You may qualify at the GS-14, if you fulfill the following qualifications: A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service: Applies Department of Defense and other Federal agency responsibilities and functions to DoD's military family and veteran programs. Gathers and analyzes information on problems and gaps within current military family and veteran programs and policies to determine appropriate actions, resolutions, strategic goals and to provide recommendations to improve the systems. Applies principles, concepts, methods, and procedures of development, coordination, dissemination, implementation, and assessment of policy within the Joint Staff, to include the ability to plan and conduct the policy functions described above. Applies the art and function of crafting policy and the ability to develop, coordinate, and present solutions to policy problems, as well as identify and determine how to capitalize on policy opportunities. Develops solutions based on findings of projects and studies and turns solutions into recommendations to provide to unique and unusual issues or problems with multiple variables in order to assist family members. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
